V Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon

2006 was a late vintage of moderation. A mild summer, with only one heat spike, allowed the fruit to hang until fully mature.  Napa Valley achieved a “Bordeaux-like” harvest, where Brix accumulation and flavor maturity progressed hand in hand without excessive sugar or raisins. It was picked in two lots on October 20th and 31st and was blessed by the year’s extended summer/early fall conditions of dry and warm days and cool nights.

Winemakers welcomed the long, cool, growing season as the grapes continued to develop more flavor, depth, and texture while maturing on the vines. At V Madrone, it was the fourth vintage and “sixth leaf” of the vineyard which was planted in 2002. As the vines mature with each passing year they thrust their roots deeper into the gravelly, volcanic and well-drained hillside slopes of the V Madrone estate vineyard and produce increasingly more interesting and complex flavor profiles in each succeeding cabernet vintage.

The 2008 vintage was early and light. An early mid-March bud break followed by a cool, but dry spring and summer. A few hot spells pushed the fruit to full maturity by late September/early October and harvest was accomplished on the perfect day of ripeness. The fifth harvest of the V Madrone Cabernet vineyard was the best yet, and a great indication of vintages to come. With the maturity of vines comes a depth of roots in the ground which also contributes to the depth of flavor. The two distinct types of soil:  red volcanic iron-laden soil and gravelly, schist hillside combine to make V Madrone a unique and spectacular vineyard site.

2016 was a near-perfect growing season thanks to ideal weather conditions. Spring bud break came early due to dry and relatively warm soils from a drought. This essentially sped-up the growing cycle, and we were able to monitor progress in the vineyard without any major heat spikes to cause concern.
